Budapest Hungary Budapest transport

Budapest public transport is operated by the Budapest Transport Company and consists of five main sectors, representing by bus, tram, underground (metro), HÉV, and trolley bus.

The Budapest Metro is the underground network, comprising three lines, each marked in different colour and distinct number. It is the second oldest metro system after the London underground.

  • M1-yellow line
  • M2-red line
  • M3 -blue line

Nowadays the only meeting point between the lines is Deák tér, but the additional ones are going to be constructed in the future.

The ticket should be validated at the entrance of the metro by the orange-coloured machines. The current date, time, and other information is indicated on the tickets, so be sure that everything is correct and that you use a legal ticket, as there are a lot of inspectors, appointed to check the validation of your tickets.

At the underground ticket offices you can buy various types of tickets: daily, weekend, weekly, biweekly, and monthly tickets. One ticket is valid for one line only, so if you change the lines, another ticket should be bought.

Buses, trams, and trolley buses run according the certain schedules, displaying the departure times from the terminals of this or that stop. The tickets are to be purchased at the red or orange vending machines. The red lines are expresses, which pull up only on the main stops of the itinerary.

In general, the bus routes serve the city of Budapest, but some of these lines accomplish runs beyond the borders of the city. These buses are marked with brown stripes. But remember that outside the city you should validate another ticket.

The nigh buses exist as well, operating within the centre and most visited areas of the city only.

Suburban railway, or so-named HÉV, follows the routes, connecting the city centre with the suburban areas, surrounding small towns, and villages. The tickets are purchases at the same vending machines, as for the other means of public transport, but when leaving the city borders you should buy another ticket.

Except the tickets for the public means of transport, various passes are available, but the most economical and profitable deal, and especially for foreigners, are Budapest Cards, allowing obtaining discounts for 48 or 72 hours.

Buying this card you receive free use of public transport, free, or discounted entry into about 60 museums and sights, discounts at rent a car services, discounts at restaurants and thermal baths, half-price city tours, discount-price tickets to cultural and folklore programs, sport areas and many other places. The card is valid for adults and children aged under fourteen.
